The Master Shipbuilder
“When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don’t throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer” - Corrie tenBoom (holocaust survivor)
Many years ago a minister’s son committed suicide. Ten days after the funeral, the minister stood at the pulpit and announced his text. It read, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
Struggling with emotion, the minister said: “I cannot make my son’s suicide fit into this passage. ...Yet somehow I believe that when all of life is over, when God has fully worked out his perfect will, even my son’s suicide will be woven into the final tapestry of his eternal design.
“It’s like the miracle of the shipyard. Almost every part of our oceangoing vessels is made of steel. If you take any single part...and throw it into the ocean, it will sink. Steel doesn’t float! But when the ship builders are finished...that massive ship is virtually unsinkable. By the design of the master shipbuilder, steel has been made to float!
“Taken by itself, my son’s suicide is senseless. Throw it into the sea of Romans 8:28, and it sinks. But I believe that when the Eternal Shipbuilder has finally finished, when God has worked out his perfect design, even this senseless tragedy will somehow work to our eternal good. I can’t even imagine how, but I know it will!”
Maybe you’ve experienced something like this minister. Many individuals and families in Welland have gone through similar tragedies and found hope in God’s eternal plan. Whatever the situation in your life you can know and experience God’s peace in the midst of tragedy.
